Unbelievable moment shows volcano being awakened by cardboard box thrown off a cliff

  • Incredible footage shows a volcano being awoken by a large object in Ethiopia
  • Two men threw organic waste into the site to see what would happen to a human
  • The experiment was originally conducted in 2002 but has sparked interest again

Unbelievable footage has captured the moment a man awoke a volcano by launching an object into it.

The video shows two men standing above an active volcano. Too close for comfort, they swing a large object from the cliff of the site.

The mysterious object plummets down the pit and eventually hits the bottom, breaking the crust of the lava.

Leaving behind a small hole, bursts of lava immediately flow from it, spewing small flames before suddenly widening.

Bursts of lava flow from the small hole and, in a matter of seconds, the whole site has awoken

The pierced hole begins to smoke, sending more molten waves out and, in a matter of seconds, the whole site has awoken.

It turns out the men at the top of the volcano weren’t just dancing with death, but were part of a research project testing what would happen if a human being fell into lava from such heights.

They conducted the experiment at the Erta Ale volcano in Ethiopia, a continuously active basaltic shield volcano.

The team wanted to find out if a person falling from great heights could potentially break through the surface crust

And thankfully, they opted for organic matter, rather than a real person, using camp waste in a cardboard box.

According to NBC News, the experiment was conducted in 2002 by Germany-based researcher Richard Roscoe, who used a 30 kilogram bag of leftover food and other organic matter to mimic the weight of a human.

Posting to the YouTube account Photovolcania he wrote: ‘It is frequently discussed whether it is possible to sink in lava. Due to its high density, a person would generally be expected to remain on the surface.

‘Indeed it is possible to briefly walk on certain types of lava if professional heat-protective clothing is worn (do not try yourself).

‘However, the video shows that falling from a height, a large object and thus also a person would be able to penetrate the crust of the lake and submerge in it.’

The object had an estimated weight of 30kg and had a size of 60x60x60cm, while the fall height was around 80 metres, according to Photovolcania.

The experiment was posted back in 2012, but the horrors of the natural world have once again sparked interest as the post has gone viral on Reddit.

One person joked: ‘Maybe that’s how we should get rid of our rubbish.’

While another jibed: ‘Not everyone has ready access to an active volcano.’

Meanwhile, others were shocked the men had dared to go near the active volcano. One person commented: ‘I will never understand why anyone would go near the lip of a volcano. One wrong move and you’re burning/ melting.’
