WEATHER warnings are in place across Britain with torrential rain and icy temperatures set to hit the country in the coming days.

Temperatures could plunge as low as four degrees at the start of next week, while flood warnings are in place in Scotland and the north of England.

The Environment Agency has said that high levels on the River Witham could bring flooding across Lincolnshire.

Floods are expected in the Low Barlings area with a risk to low-lying properties.

Many of the rural villages north of Boston are also at risk after a breach of the river last week, with Agency staff currently managing levels using water pumps.

Weather experts also expect high tides and spray to affect the seafront in Scarborough, with locals being warned to take care and avoid low-lying roads and footpaths along the coast.

In the South, a weather warning is also in force in the South Winterbourne Valley west of Dorchester.

Residents are being advised to activate pumps to guard against groundwater if they have not already done so, and to contact their local water company if they notice any sewerage draining issues.

Groundwater levels are also expected to begin rising again at the start of next week after further rainfall over the weekend.

Less severe flood alerts are in place in parts of Dorset and west Hampshire, Oxfordshire, and North Yorkshire.

In Scotland, a Yellow rain warning in in force along the full length of the west coast.

Persistent heavy rain followed by showers are forecast from Greenock, west of Glasgow, to Fort William, Portree, and Ullapool in the north.

The Met Office says buses and train services as well as roads are likely to be hit, with journey times expected to be longer, and that minor interruptions to power supplies and other services was also possible.

Temperatures are also expected to fall over the weekend, reaching seven and eight degress in London, Cardiff, Manchester, and Edinburgh.

The country is also forecast to see temperatures as low as three and four degrees at the start of next week.
