Two people have died after being pulled from the water at a popular holiday spot in eastern Victoria.

One man and one woman were brought to shore at Bastion Point in Mallacoota about 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Paramedics attended, but the pair died at the beach. No further details have been released on what happened or the identities of the deceased.

The beach is near Victoria’s border with NSW and next to Main Beach, which known to have rips.

There were no lifeguard patrols at Bastion Point on Wednesday, according to Surf Life Saving Australia’s Beachsafe website.

“Standing on Bastion Point, you can see waves breaking over the bar up to several hundreds of metres out to sea,” the website states.

“Local knowledge and experience are required to successfully cross the bar.”

At least 64 people have drowned in Australia this summer, according to Royal Life Saving Australia.
