A 16-year-old died after getting mauled by three dogs in a yard early Saturday in Irving, Texas, just northwest of Dallas.

Police responded to a “suspicious circumstance” call around 4:45 a.m. and found the boy being attacked in the backyard of a home.

Officers jumped the fence to attempt a rescue which caused the dogs to turn on the officers, biting one. The officers fired on the dogs and shot one, which later had to be euthanized. The other two dogs were captured and taken to an animal shelter.

The teen was rushed to a hospital but died from the injuries sustained in the dog attack.

‘We definitely don’t know why he was in that backyard’

He was later identified by the Dallas County Medical Examiner as Nelson Cabrera, NBC DFW reported.

Irving Police Department said Nelson did not live at the residence with the dogs.

“We don’t want to speculate on what he might have been doing, but we definitely don’t know why he was in that backyard,” Irving police public information officer Robert Reeves said.

Guillermo Lorenzo, the homeowner, told NBC DFW that Cabrera was homeless and had been seen passing through the neighborhood earlier.

“He has no right to be in that yard. Nobody has a right to be in that yard. This is private property. That’s why the fence is tall,” Lorenzo said.
