A BRIT mum at a Tenerife hotel locked down amid a coronavirus outbreak has spoken of her fear for her children as guests ignore advice to stay in their rooms.

Mum-of-two Lara Pennington is among hundreds currently inside the H10 Costa Adeje Palace Hotel on the western side of the Spanish Canary Island.

The hotel was quarantined after an Italian doctor at the site tested positive for the coronavirus, which has now infected more than 80,000 people globally and killed more than 2,700.

Guests have been advised to stay in their rooms but allowed to roam freely around the hotel if they choose, with many pictured on loungers by the pool and using the hotel buffet.

In an interview today with Good Morning Britain, Pennington spoke of her fear that the strategy could be endangering guests.

"We've not left our room. We're not going to be leaving our room," she said.

"We're going to be following the guidelines that are being issued [for] self-isolation.

"However, it's clear there are large numbers of guests here at the hotel who are leaving their rooms and are now following that process.

"A containment strategy that's being put into place, which is similar to the cruise ship, is clearly not working.

"If they wish to keep us safe here then it should be an enforced quarantine.

"The virus is clearly going to spread as people are not following the guidelines for the containment.

'CHILDREN ARE PANICKED'

Earlier this month, over 3,700 passengers and crew were quarantined on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship in ship after ten cases of the coronaviruses were diagnosed.

More than 620 people on the ship ultimately contracted the virus, and Japanese authorities have faced criticism for their handling of the outbreak.

"I have two children," said Pennington.

"And I have my in-laws here who are in their 70s, one of which has an underlying health problem.

"We're not being looked after in terms of our vulnerability. We've not been tested.

"All we've been given is some thermometers to self-analyse whether our temperatures are going up or not."

Holding back tears, she added: "My children are very anxious. They're not sleeping, they're panicked."

She also said that medics who had visited the room had agreed with her criticisms of the strategy.

“I asked them if they would let their families go downstairs and they said no," she said.

Other guests at the hotel have appealed to the prime minister to intervene and get them get back to the UK.

Mandy Davis, on holiday with husband Roger, told the Mail: "Nobody knows what the right thing to do is, because nobody's had this virus before.

"So please, let's sort something out, come and rescue us please, Boris.

"And let's just get the hell out of here."
