THE South Pacific island Samoa has banned Elton John movie Rocketman over its depiction of homosexuality.
Censor Leiataua Niuapu Faaui said the biopic clashed with the nation’s “culture and our Christian beliefs”.
Apollo Cinemas in the capital Apia announced on Facebook it was cancelling screenings “due to censoring issues”.
About 97 per cent of Samoa’s population of almost 200,000 are Christians and sex between men is a crime.
Starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell and Richard Madden, Rocketman tells of Sir Elton’s rise to fame.
Scenes involving gay sex and drug-taking were cut from a screening in Russia. Sir Elton has criticised the censorship.
