THE Culture Secretary has urged BBC, ITV and C4 to give women’s sporting events equal screen time to men’s.
Nicky Morgan said it would mean “future generations of female sporting talent can be inspired by who they see on their screens”.
She wants top women’s competitions to be shown alongside the “crown jewels” of men’s events that must be broadcast live.
These include the Champions League final, Rugby World Cup final and all football World Cup games.
The new rules would also see Manchester City’s Steph Houghton getting the same airtime as Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero.
Speaking at the Royal Television Society’s conference in Cambridge, Ms Morgan said: “Where a men’s event is listed, the women’s equivalent would be too.
“This would be an important step in giving female sporting talent the coverage they deserve and putting men’s and women’s sport on an equal footing at last.”
She pointed to the 2019 Women’s World Cup, when 11.7million tuned in to watch England in the semi-final.
