Princess Diana kept Prince Harry’s gender a secret while pregnant because Prince Charles was desperate for a girl, a royal biographer has claimed.
Charles’s first comment on seeing Harry after his birth in September 1984 was said to have been ‘Oh God, it’s a boy’, before adding: ‘And he’s even got red hair.’
The claims re-emerged today after first being published in 1992 in Andrew Morton’s book Diana: Her True Story which exposed her unhappy marriage.

According to the Daily Express, Diana is said to have told Mr Morton: ‘I knew Harry was going to be a boy because I saw on the scan.
‘Charles always wanted a girl. He wanted two children, and he wanted a girl. I knew Harry was a boy, and I didn’t tell him.’
Diana and Charles welcomed their first son Prince William in June 1982, one year after their wedding at St Paul’s Cathedral in London after she had just turned 20.
But Charles really wanted a girl, allegedly telling Diana’s mother Frances Kydd at Harry’s christening: ‘We were so disappointed – we thought it would be a girl.’

Recalling the exchange, Diana told Mr Morton: ‘Mummy snapped his head off, saying: ‘You should realised how lucky you are to have a child that’s normal.’
‘Every since that day the shutters have come down, and that’s what he does when he gets somebody answering back at him.’
Diana and Charles divorced in 1996, less than a year after a Panorama interview in which the Princess famously said there were ‘three people’ in her marriage.
She also revealed that she knew Charles was having an affair with his now wife Camilla. Diana died following a car crash in a tunnel in Paris in August 1997.
