A plus mother said she was kicked out of an all you can eat buffet for dressing ‘too provocatively’ and insists she was targeted because of her size.
Sueretta Emke, 25, was celebrating her young son’s birthday on Sunday with her husband, Andrew in Erie, Pennsylvania.
She took her son to the zoo, then to pizza restaurant Chuck E Cheese, then to Golden Coral – which is an unlimited buffet-centered chain restaurant where her crop top and jean shorts apparently crossed a line.
Emke took to Facebook and wrote: ‘I went up to get myself something to eat . When I was approached by a manager and told I was dressed “too provocatively” and another customer had complained so I needed to put something else on or leave.’
She said she did not have a change of clothes and continued: ‘He never would tell me exactly what I was showing too much of when I asked point blank what I was showing too much of. He would respond that it wasn’t his place to say. Ummm excuse me ????’
Golden Corral, which boasts itself as the ‘Home of the Chocolate Wonderfall’ and is currently serving endless ribs daily, does not have any available information regarding a dress code on their website.
Emke said her husband tried speaking with the manager, but it only ’caused an even bigger scene,’ and she was forced to leave.
‘They have no dress code and even if they did they just cant pick and choose who they are going to make up a dress code or enforce in on based on another customer complaint,’ she said.
Emke said she believes she was discriminated against for her weight, claiming: ‘I have seen people in there wearing less and nothing is said to them but I really do believe something was said to me because I’m not thin so it’s not considered sexy.’
The angry mother said she called the franchise owner, who she said was ‘extremely rude.’
‘He ignored my question and continued on his point of that no they don’t have a dress code (which the manager tried to say they did) but they are a family restaurant so if another customer complains they then address the persons attire (again ummm what???)’ she wrote.
She continued: ‘I asked the franchise owner…Ok so if I’m at your restaurant and someone is in their religious garb if that were to offend me and I were to say something you would kick them out??? Because thats NOT ok either ! He ignored my question…’
Now, Emke says she never wants to wear the shirt again, which she said was a new shirt.
‘I’ve never owned a crop top before and I was nervous at first about wearing it but my husband loved the way it looked on me and encouraged me to wear it since I liked it so much. I really felt cute in it and now I never wanna wear that shirt again even though it was the first time I ever wore it and I felt good about my self in it,’ she said.
Emke updated the post on Tuesday to say that she spoke to a member of Golden Corral’s corporate office, who she said apologized.
She also said the chain restaurant spokesman ‘is sending me me some gift cards and as he said “they will be good at any golden corral in the USA but I’m just pointing out others within driving distance since I’m sure you dont want to return to the Erie one and I dont blame you!”‘
Emke concluded by saying: ‘ I hope there will be a day that no one is treated this way. But until then I’ll just keep trying to change the world for the better of ALL people .. and hey the gift cards are a nice touch.’
