A HEARTBROKEN mum has paid tribute to her "princess" daughter who died in her arms after collapsing from a mystery "flu" days before Christmas.
Alex Williams, 42, desperately performed CPR on five-year-old Isla Wilkinson after she collapsed at their home in Plains Farm, Sunderland last Monday.
Tragically, Isla's brain was starved of oxygen for 20 minutes before paramedics managed to restart her heart which had stopped beating.
Receptionist Alex, who is also a mother to Aiden, nine, and Georgia, 22, said her daughter passed away on Friday after being placed on life support.
She told SunOnline: "They put her on life support and oxygen, but she hadn't had oxygen to her brain they said for 20 minutes.
"And she never woke up."
It is still not clear why Isla collapsed on Monday although she had woken up with a temperature and flu-like symptoms.
Alex said her son had been off school the previous Friday due to illness and thought her daughter had caught the same bug when she woke up ill three days later.
The distraught mum said she was struggling to come to terms with the loss of her daughter.
She added: "At the moment it is a total mystery. They don't understand how she just went that quickly in the house.
"I need those answers.
"They are doing an autopsy but it will be a while before the report is finished and we can find out.
"She just looked so perfect lying there like nothing was wrong. That's why I can't get my head around it."
After collapsing, Isla was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital where medics told her family that she did not have long to live because of the lack of oxygen to her brain.
She was then transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where Alex spent two days by her bed without sleeping.
On Thursday, after a scan, doctors broke the news that there was incredible swelling on the little girl's brain.
Alex said: "I knew then what they were going to say."
The consultants told the mum that Isla's brain damage was too severe and they would keep her comfortable.
