Star sixth-grade student, 11, is kicked out of Catholic school in Missouri after his mother slammed the school for being homophobic by banning Duolingo because it translates the words ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian’

  • Hollee and Paul Muller were told on July 19 that their 11-year-old son Will would not be able to return to St. John LaLande Catholic School in Blue Springs
  • The Missouri couple, described as mainstays of the parish and school, objected to the changes introduced by the new pastor, Father Sean McCaffery
  • McCaffery banned any books with homosexual characters, blocked the use of the app Duolingo because it translated words like ‘gay’, and banned CNN

A Missouri Catholic school has kicked out an 11-year-old boy because his parents disagreed with the new pastor’s hardline policies on anything discussing homosexuality.

St. John LaLande school informed Hollee and Paul Muller on July 19 that their son, Will, would not be welcome in the new term.

They said Will’s enrollment had been revoked because ‘the values of your family are not in alignment with those of our school’.

The Muller family were described by other parents as stalwarts of the parish and school, serving as volunteer basketball and track coaches and running a Tuesday night ‘open gym’ for the students.

Paul Muller attended the school, as did his 15 siblings, and other parents told The Kansas City Star that Will was well-liked, in addition to being a star pupil.

Father Sean McCaffery took over the parish a year ago and began banning books and learning materials he believed promoted homosexuality

The family’s disagreement with the school began when Father Sean McCaffery became pastor of the parish a year ago.

Hollee Muller told the paper: ‘The priest came rolling in hot.’

She said he began immediately ‘yanking books’ from the school library, including one about a polar bear with two mothers.

He got rid of all of Rick Riordan’s work, some of which features characters who are gay, bisexual, lesbian and trans.

The Duolingo language app was taken away, according to parents, because it translates the words ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian.’

And CNN 10, a news source for ‘explanation seekers on the go or in the classroom,’ was banned, ‘because the priest said we don’t need the media teaching our kids.’

Hollee Mulller added: ‘I don’t think being blatantly homophobic is a teaching of the Catholic Church.’

She was also among those who spoke up after a teacher told her older son’s seventh grade homeroom that girls who wear leggings might leave the impression that they are ‘whores.’

The teacher reportedly said it was up to girls to help boys get to heaven by protecting them from lustful thoughts.

School officials said the anger was ‘a big misunderstanding’, but Hollee Muller was among those to write to the principal, Susan Martin.

She suggested that ‘perhaps we need to start working on educating our boys how to respect others and appropriate treatment of women instead of focusing on teaching girls how to ‘stay safe’ around others.’

Her older son, Andrew, a rising eighth grader, had already decided not to stay at the school, where he had grown uncomfortable over the last year.

But his younger brother Will still very much wanted to be there, the mother told the paper.

‘He’s in tears,’ she said.

Hollee and Paul Muller rejected what they saw as heavy handedness by the new pastor

The school, in their email, said the decision to kick out Will was made ‘after prayerful consideration’.

They said that the Mullers ‘stated both verbally and in writing you do not agree with nor do you support the teachings of the Catholic Church.’

The letter continued: ‘After prayerful consideration and discussion among our school administration it is obvious we no longer have a partnership with you, since the values of your family are not in alignment with those of our school.

‘Therefore, the school administration has made the decision to disenroll your child from our school.’

Hollee Muller noted on Facebook: ‘Can you imagine that absolute and unconditional love, acceptance, inclusion and celebration of another human can get you punished? Weird, I know.’

The school has not responded to DailyMail.com’s request for comment.
