Meet the 6ft 4in Great Dane who towers over his owner on his hind legs but is ‘scared of his own shadow’

He may be the size of a small horse – but Wellington the ten stone Great Dane is ‘scared of his own shadow’.

The two-and-a-half-year-old dog stands at more than 6’4” on his hind legs making him more than a foot taller than his owner Alice Banister, 21.

Alice – who lives with her parents, in Derbyshire – said: ‘He’s the most expressive dog I’ve ever known, and if he isn’t happy about something you can see it in his face.

‘I love his inability to realise he is not a small dog and to still want to sit on laps, squeeze into small places and get stuck, interrupt zoom meetings with his enormous head and play with small dogs, even if he does accidentally crush them.’

She added: ‘However, travelling is surprisingly easy with Wellington.

Despite his size, he’s scared of bin bags, the postman and ‘anyone wearing hi-vis’

‘He’s the most expressive dog I’ve ever known, and if he isn’t happy about something you can see it in his face,’ Ms Banister said 

‘Danes are known for being able to curl up small, and he loves it. He usually travels in my mums Land Rover where he has plenty of space, but when she is away, he has been in my tiny Toyota Aygo!’

Despite his size, Alice, a musician, said he is not the bravest member of the family.

She said: ‘Although he is huge, he is a bit of a wimp, and is scared of lots of random things such as bin bags, the postman, fizzy drinks making a noise, card machines that beep, anyone wearing hi-vis and loud noises.

‘We can no longer lift him into the bath so we have to hose him down in the garden, but the water must be warm.’

Astonishingly, Wellington is just an average sized Great Dane and will have to grow a fair bit more to beat the world’s tallest dog, Zeus, from Texas, who towers over him at 7’.

Alice said: ‘He really is the centre point of the family. In the past, our spaniels would fit into our busy schedule happily, but now we fit into his.’
