A man accused of raping and killing a young girl in Mexico has been burnt to death by a lynch mob.

Alfredo Roblero was confronted by a group of villagers in the southern state of Chiapas before the execution.

He was accused of raping and killing six-year-old Jarid, who was reported missing on January 9.

Jarid's body was found by a roadside the following day.

Mobile phone footage shows the group untying Roblero from a post and pushing him to the ground before dousing petrol over him.

Angry villagers kick him and punch him as he struggles to get up.

The mob then set him alight and watch him writhing in pain as he is slowly engulfed in flames.

He can be heard shrieking and screaming in agony on the ground while the crowd whistle and watch him suffer.

The girl's aunt allegedly tried to take the suspect to the police and was stopped by the angry villagers who said Roblero was not going to leave the community alive.

Local police were reportedly arrived at the scene but were unable to save the suspect

Authorities in Chiapas said in a statement that citizens are not allowed to take the law into their own hands.

Officials also vowed to open an investigation into Roblero's death.
