Man, 22, and girl, 17, fight for their lives in hospital after car smashed into wall with bang so loud that neighbours thought it was an earthquake

A 22-year-old man and a teenage girl aged 17 are critically ill in hospital after their car smashed into a wall. 

Nearby residents said the crash on Mellish Road in Walsall was so loud they thought an earthquake had happened. 

The pair were rushed to hospital and the road was sealed off by police in the early hours of Sunday morning.  

Sand was spread across the road and the wall of a front garden was badly damaged and remained surrounded by cones and tape.

Locals rushed out to help the pair, with one witness saying the car’s engine was on the footpath on the opposite side of the road and there was ‘nothing left’ of the front of the vehicle. 

A resident said: ‘We were all just sitting down when we heard a loud bang.

‘My brother and cousins were the first to go out and see what had happened.

‘We were distraught because my mum died in a car crash so it brought back a lot of memories. We were all crying.

‘Everyone came running out to help. At first we thought it was an earthquake it was so loud.

‘A car was completely shattered and the engine of the car was out on the road.

‘It happened at around 12.45 in the morning. We all started crying when we saw it.’

Another resident who heard the crash thought that the noise was their kitchen collapsing.

Another added: ‘There was a big bang, we even felt it through the house.

‘We thought the roof of the kitchen had collapsed in so came to have a look and out of the window we saw a huge cloud of smoke.

‘I came out to see what was going on. The vehicle was in the centre of the road on top of the bollards.

‘Everyone was shouting to call the police. The engine was on the footpath on the other side of the road. There was nothing left of the front of the vehicle.

‘It was around 1am and police arrived within five minutes. I started telling cars to divert away from the scene. Lots of residents were coming out to help.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: ‘We’re appealing for witnesses after a collision in Walsall which has left two people with serious injuries.

‘We were called to reports that a blue VW Golf has collided with a wall on Mellish Road, Walsall, just after 1am this morning.

‘A man, aged 22 and a 17-year-old girl have been taken to hospital where they both remain in a critical condition.

‘The road was closed while we carried out a forensic examination of scene.

‘Enquiries are underway and we’re urging anyone who saw anything or has any information which may assist us to get in touch.
