Kamala Harris furiously lashed out at Republicans for trying to ‘deny women their freedoms’ in remarks Tuesday evening after a Supreme Court leak showed a conservative draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade.

The vice president’s first appearance after testing positive for COVID-19 last month was ironically to a gala for EMILY’s List – a political action committee that aims to get Democratic female candidates election who are favor of advancing abortion rights.

Her remarks came 24 hours after a leak from the Supreme Court showed conservative Justice Samual Alito’s draft opinion to overturn the landmark abortion case that dates back 50 years and gave constitutional protections for women to terminate their pregnancies.

‘Roe v. Wade in its power has protected a woman’s right, her right, to make decisions about her own body for nearly half a century,’ Harris said to the room of progressives Tuesday evening.

‘If the court overturns Roe v. Wade, it will be a direct assault on freedom, on the fundamental right of self-determination to which we are all entitled as Americans.’

In a Politico/Morning Consult poll taken immediately after the document was made public, 50 percent of voters said that Roe v. Wade should not be overturned versus the 28 percent who said it should be.

A large portion of respondents – 22 percent – said to pollsters that they are undecided.

After the leak, Republicans immediately praised the potential ruling from the court but also called for the person who gave the document to Politico to be brought to justice.

‘Those Republican leaders who are trying to weaponize the use of the law against women. Well we say, how dare they?’ Harris told the cheering crowd. ‘How dare they tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her own body? How dare they? How dare they try to stop her from determining her own future? How dare they try to deny women their rights and their freedoms?’

‘It has never been more clear which party wants to expand our rights, and which party wants to restrict them,’ Harris continued, vowing Democrats are ‘not going back.’

She laid out for voters a choice in the 2022 midterm elections between two very differing views on abortion.

Harris walked out on stage Tuesday wearing a mask before taking it off for her remarks. The vice president’s speech was her first public appearance after testing positive for COVID-19 last month

Chief Justice John Roberts, according to Tuesday reports, would not support a complete overturn of the ruling but would support a rule banning abortion after 15 weeks

Harris was already on the schedule to speak at EMILY’s List annual conference, but her speech had to be completely rewritten in one day after the unprecedented Supreme Court leak.

The vice president sought to make the issue larger than just abortion, claiming an overturn to Roe v Wade would also threaten Americans’ privacy.

‘At its core, Roe recognizes the fundamental right to privacy,’ Harris told the crowd.

‘Think about that for a minute. When the right to privacy is attacked, anyone in our country may face a future where the government can interfere in their personal decisions. Not just women; anyone.’

If Democrats are really going to be galvanized by abortion as an election issue like Republicans are, left-leaning strategists claim that Harris could be the best face to make the case.

Democratic strategist Alencia Johnson, who worked as a senior adviser on Biden’s 2020 campaign, told Politico Playbook the White House should ‘let [Harris] loose.’

‘I’m hopeful this is the energy she and the president will bring to this fight,’ she said of the vice president’s Tuesday evening remarks.
