A homeless man has been left critically-ill in hospital after a cyclist doused him with fuel and set him alight. Surveillance camera footage captured the horrific attack on the victim in Santa Ana, California, on Good Friday.
The clip shows the cyclist pedal up to his victim as he lays slumped against the wall of a closed shop. That cyclist – who police say is another transient called Adrian Alberto Rodriguez Herrera, 45, can be seen shaking liquid over the victim.
His target can be seen repeatedly swatting at him in an attempt to protect himself. But the man police say is Herrera is then seen striking a light, with the victim engulfed with flames moments later.
Herrara’s alleged victim sustained first, second and third-degree burns on his upper body. He was taken to a local trauma and burn center, where he remains in a critical condition, CBS LA reported.
Herrera fled the scene on his bike shortly afterwards police say. But he has since was arrested on suspicion of arson and attempted murder. The investigation is ongoing, with police yet to share a possible motive for the horrific arson attack.
