A GIRL of ten was allegedly raped by a burglar hours before being murdered by an 11-year-old boy in a separate incident at a care home.

The victim, named only as Lena, was found dead in her room at the facility in Wunsiedel, in Germany's Bavaria region, on April 4.

The youngster, who was said to be too shy to join the other children on a skiing holiday, was days away from being reunited with her dad for Easter.

But it has now emerged that on the same night she was killed, a man allegedly entered the welfare home through an open bathroom window.

The 25-year-old suspect, named only as Daniel T, is claimed to have been scouring for items to steal when he came across Lena and the 11-year-old boy accused of her murder.

Cops believe the crook raped the young girl – but left the building before she was killed, reports Onetz.

Later the same night, police allege the boy – who was her roommate – stabbed her to death her after they got into an argument.

Matthias Goers, a spokesman for the Hof public prosecutor's office, said: "With regard to the killing of the girl, the investigators and the public prosecutor's office assume that the 11-year-old boy killed her without the 25-year-old's involvement."

Police said that the boy was identified as the killer after he appeared to be unable to answer any questions when quizzed about the death of the girl.

He lived in the facility with two other siblings who were not involved in the killing.

If found guilty, the 11-year-old boy faces no consequences for the crime since he was under the age of criminal responsibility – which stands at 14 in Germany.

The man accused of sexually assaulting Lena, meanwhile, is suspected of committing five burglaries since the start of 2022.

In one incident, he allegedly pinched construction machinery worth 16,000 euros (£13,500) and flogged it on the internet.

Lena had been in the care home while a court decided on whether to grant custody to the dad.

One of her father's neighbours, Sandra B., 33, told German media: "She would have had the opportunity to go to her dad.

"I'm stunned, speechless. I'm lost for words. I can't understand why it happened like this.

"And all that in a home where there should be supervision. Where, as a parent, you think everything is fine."

She described her as a "fun-loving, open-minded" girl who loved horses and playing the piano.
