Former Dr Who star David Tennant (with his wife Georgia) is splashing out on building a swimming pool in the garden of his £2.6 million London home

Former Dr Who star David Tennant is splashing out on building a swimming pool in the garden of his £2.6 million west London home.

The actor is following in the footsteps of TV presenter Holly Willoughby and celebrity couple George and Amal Clooney by going for the ultimate luxury feature.

Work on the 15.7 metre pool – thought to cost between £100,000 and £150,000 – is to begin soon after he was granted planning permission by his local council.

The actor, who recently announced he was expecting his fifth child, has also been given permission to construct a building alongside the pool to house a changing room, gym and garden room.

Tennant – who adopted Georgia’s son Ty in the same year that the couple married in 2011 – joked on American TV that his growing family has become cause for concern as their eldest son is now giving his parents ‘lectures on birth control’.

The couple are already parents to 17-year-old Ty, Olive, eight, Wilfred, six, and Doris, four.

Plans submitted to his local council reveal that 48-year-old Tennant’s pool will be below ground in his back garden and hidden from neighbours by a row of trees.

According to the architect’s drawings, the pool will be rectangular and using material of a ‘high standard’.

Top of the range swimming pools – complete with concrete lining, heating and marble finish – can cost up to £150,000, one national pool builder said.

They can also take up to three months to build as the excavation section of the project is so dependent on the weather.

But they are popular among celebrities with This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby owning a pool at her south west London home.

Hollywood superstar George Clooney and his lawyer wife Amal are having a pool installed at their Thameside home in Berkshire.

Other celebrities and sports stars have pools, but with British weather so uncertain, have chosen to have them built indoors.

I’m a Celebrity winner Harry Redknapp has an indoor pool at his home in Dorset while former Chelsea captain John Terry has a pool at his Surrey mansion.

In the planning submission for Tennant’s proposal, the architects acting for the actor said: ‘The proposed pool is designed to sit below ground level and not visible by either neighbour when standing in their garden.

‘The pool will be constructed to a high standard and have a series of raised beds for trees. This will help in shielding the pool and help bed it into the garden.’

Despite running into problems with neighbours over a previous planning application no one has objected to his latest building works at the detached house, West London.

Notices of the planning application lodged with his local are pinned to a tree close to his home.

Store owners were unaware he had even applied for planning approval while neighbours in the flats next door seem unperturbed.

One of the occupants gave his full approval to the pool.

He said: ‘Good luck to him. He obviously has the money so why shouldn’t he have a pool. I can’t see it from my flat so it makes no difference.’

Other neighbours were pleased that the local council had approved the plans.

‘It’s great having someone famous live here,’ said a 28-year-old woman who lives on the same road.

‘We don’t often see him but if he’s out with his children he always nods or smiles.’

Tennant has lived in the Victorian property since 2010.

He was said to have been ‘heartbroken’ when the council rejected his plans for a third storey in 2016.

But a year later they approved a two-storey extension at first floor level and a single storey rear extension as well as the enlargement of the existing basement.

Tennant is currently in New York promoting his latest TV series Good Omens where he plays a demon in modern day Britain on the brink of the Apocalypse.
