They have snuggled down to prepare for their winter hibernation. By the time they fully wake up in late spring, the election will long be over – and many hope Brexit will be too.
The dormice are in one of 50 wooden nesting boxes at the National Trust’s Cotehele estate in Cornwall. They were photographed in the hand of one of the rangers who carry out monthly checks.

The UK’s hazel dormouse population has fallen by a third in 20 years to around 45,000. They are extinct in 17 counties.
Habitat loss is believed to be the main reason. Lead ranger George Holmes said: ‘Sadly, dormice are so rare now that most people will never see one.’
The public are being asked to report sightings to the People’s Trust for Endangered Species at surveydata.ptes.org/dormouse-database
