New York: A vehicle ploughed into a crowd of about 50 people at an immigration protest on Friday afternoon in Manhattan, with at least six people injured, a spokesman for the New York City Police Department said.
The incident happened after 4 pm at the corner of 39th Street and Third Avenue, police said.
None of the injuries appeared to be life threatening and the vehicle involved remained at the scene, police said. But few other details were immediately available.
Police said seven people were struck.
This did not appear to be an intentional act, according a police official.
A witness on the scene told NBC News that she saw a BMW speed through the intersection with two white women in the front.
"I hear people screaming in the front, I look behind me, the woman is ploughing through. I run out of the way. I see bodies flying…"
Several protesters were detained.
The demonstration was in solidarity with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees being held in a New Jersey jail.
The ICE detainees have been on a hunger strike for four weeks to protest their treatment.
