A British child has died after falling into a swimming pool while on holiday with his family in southern Spain.

The five-year-old was with his family in La Vinuela, a small village in La Axarquia region on the Costa del Sol.

The tragedy is believed to have happened at the home of the boy’s expat grandfather at around 10am this morning.

Local police were the first to reach the property after receiving an emergency call.

The little boy was found unconscious after a helicopter was sent to the Calle Las Coberteras, which is a around a 50-minute drive north-east of Malaga in Andalusia.

The five-year-old boy reportedly drowned after falling into a swimming pool at his expat grandfather’s home in La Vinuela (pictured La Vinuela reservoir), southern Spain

Paramedics were also dispatched along with an air ambulance but there was nothing doctors could do to save the youngster’s life and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Civil Guard source, said the boy was five and not four as initially believed.

He said: ‘I can confirm that a five-year-old has died from drowning in the municipality of La Vinuela.’

A source at a medical emergency response co-ordination centre said the boy was pulled from the water unconscious.

He added: ‘A call was received at 10am saying a child had fallen into a swimming pool and had been pulled out but was unconscious.

‘The incident happened in an area of La Vinuela called Los Romanes.

‘The Civil Guard, the local police and ambulance service were alerted.

‘An air ambulance was sent to the scene along with a normal ambulance but we were later informed the boy had died. The local police said he was four.’

A routine investigation into the probe has been launched, which will be coordinated by a local investigating judge.

Last month a 51-year-old British holidaymaker died after getting into difficulties in the sea off the Costa del Sol resort of Fuengirola.

And last week a 53-year-old British man died at El Palmar beach between Tarifa and Cadiz in south west Spain.
