BRITAIN last night warned Michel Barnier he's got until the end of September to broker a Brexit deal.

Michael Gove said the UK will have little choice but to give up on the talks if it hasn't seen "significant progress" by then.

During an appearance before MPs he was asked when No 10 will walk away and switch its full focus to no deal planning.

He said: "We don’t have a date per se pencilled in, but it is the case if we haven’t secured significant progress by October then it will be difficult."

Angela Merkel is already bracing for a last-minute rush to get negotiations over the finishing line.

And the EU's ambassador to Britain warned the PM he risks crashing the talks if he pushes for progress too quickly.

João Vale de Almeida said: "Speed is good. We need to use every week and every month to try and find a deal.

"But when you drive a car and you speed too much you can risk falling out of the road, so you need to go careful.

"The purpose isn’t to go faster, the purpose is to get to the destination. We should now focus on the quality of our discussions."

Mr Gove also warned the EU it risks the Irish border fix being rejected if it takes an "over bureaucratic" approach to NI-GB checks.

Stormont will hold a vote in four years' time on whether to keep the scheme in place.
