The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project recently dropped on Disney+, and it’s the animated series What If…?. The show is the first of its kind for the MCU, an anthology series that takes place outside the MCU’s main continuity.
While the show will explore some new situations, it will feature the same classic characters movie fans have come to grow and love. The main question in many fans’ minds is this: which MCU actors will voice their own characters?
What is the premise of ‘What If…?’
Generally speaking, the MCU represents one linear story. The movies and shows may present that story out of order in terms of the timeline, but they all work together as one congruent narrative.
What If…? takes characters from the MCU and places them in new situations. For example, the first episode asks the question of “What if Peggy Carter took the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers?”
It’s a way to give fans a new look at everyone’s favorite Marvel characters. They’ll be inserted in new situations that fall outside the MCU’s main continuity. It’s an animated show, which means the possibilities to explore are endless.
Because the show technically doesn’t fall within the show’s main timeline (or what Loki fans might refer to as “The Sacred Timeline”), pretty much anything can happen without running the risk of affecting any of the major films.
The show focuses mainly on characters already established within the MCU, meaning that there will be even more opportunities for fans to see their top characters in another format. But how many of the original MCU performers can they expect to hear voicing those characters?
Which Marvel actors are voicing their MCU characters?
First, the bad news: not every MCU actor will be voicing their character in What If… ?. The good news, however, is that many of them will be doing so. Disney has compiled an impressive array of MCU talent to sign up for this project.

What will the show mean for the MCU going forward?
That’s certainly an impressive cast. So what does the show mean for the entire MCU going forward?
The storylines themselves may not have an impact on the franchise’s larger story, but with Loki, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness set to blow the multiverse wide open, anything can happen in the MCU. What If…? is priming Marvel fans to expect anything from this new era of filmmaking, and they seem to be ready for it.
