Micah Plath of TLC’s Welcome to Plathville has taken many steps to set himself apart from his parents, Kim and Barry Plath, and his eight siblings. The 19-year-old moved out on his own, rebelled against his parents’ rules – including those against dating and immodest clothing – and even began to pursue a career in modeling.
On the Nov. 22 episode of Welcome to Plathville, Micah opened up about one more way in which he’d ventured out on his own: through dating rather than supervised courtships. In fact, the teen said he’d already dated and broken up with one girl in a serious relationship.
Micah said he was happy being single
On the most recent episode of Welcome to Plathville, Micah told TLC producers he was staying single for now by choice.
The aspiring model planned to focus on his career, as well as on meeting new people – especially because he hadn’t had much of a chance to do so over the years so far. All his parents’ restrictions had often put a damper on his social life.
“Here’s to my single life,” the 19-year-old said, adding: “I’m having fun being single right now.”
Still, Micah said he was glad that he’d experienced the closeness of a serious relationship with his ex-girlfriend. He explained that having a close relationship and losing it made him see things differently. In particular, he understood more than ever that he wasn’t ready to settle down and get married.
The ‘Welcome to Plathville’ star’s breakup taught him he wanted to experience more before settling down
Micah went on to explain that his past heartbreak had made him realize just how young and inexperienced he was when it came to love.
“I feel like that’s made me realize how much I need to learn before I’m ready for something so serious,” the Welcome to Plathville star said of the possibility of marriage in the future.
“I really thought I loved her, and I thought she loved me,” Micah revealed of his ex. “But I didn’t think it through all the way.”
The 19-year-old had always been taught to focus on marriage and marriage alone. But now, he knew he wanted to find the right person to marry – not just get married for the sake of it. He also wanted to celebrate his newfound freedom rather than getting tied down and regretting it later.
The aspiring model wanted to date and get to know someone rather than courting
While Micah knew now that he wasn’t ready to get married, that hadn’t always been the case. In fact, he and his ex-girlfriend had discussed the possibility of tying the knot.
“I was considering marriage, mostly because I just thought the first person you have feelings for is the person you have to marry,” the Welcome to Plathville star admitted.
Kim and Barry raised him to believe in courtships and “dating with a purpose” rather than dating without family supervision and approval. Now, Micah considered that approach to be a “hindrance” to his understanding of love.
“My parents always just said, ‘God will show you the one you’re supposed to marry,’” Micah said. “And I don’t doubt that, but I don’t believe it’s gonna come without dating.”
While his parents’ approach to relationships might have worked out for them, Micah confessed that he no longer wanted any part of it. Instead, he wanted more control over his own future – especially when it came to crucial decisions like dating and marriage.
