Waterloo Road's Chlo star Katie Griffiths has broke her silence after her character was killed off in the first episode of the new rebooted series on Tuesday night in a huge twist.

Viewers were left heartbroken during the opening instalment as Chlo, who was hit by a car earlier in the episode and appeared to just have a sprained wrist, suddenly collapsed at home and it was later revealed she had died in hospital.

And after the incredibly short-lived return and her character's shocking death, Chlo star Katie has addressed her dramatic exit from the hit BBC One series.

Speaking to Manchester Evening News, Katie, 33, who first joined Waterloo Road at just 17, said: "Waterloo Road has got a very big place in my heart and I think it's the same for anyone who has watched it and been a part of it. I started my career there and it is a show that lots of fans love, and it's got a new audience now, which is really exciting."

She added about only returning for one episode: "It’s been hard because there’s been a lot of excitement for the show, but I think that was the overriding thing, the excitement for the show coming back because it holds a special place in my heart.

"When I had the initial sit down meeting with the producers and they told me what would happen, I think the bigger picture was just isn’t it amazing that I get to go back into the character again and work with Adam again and be part of it.

"It is sad that I won’t have that again but I’m just very excited for the show and to see what comes of it."

Chlo and Donte (Adam Thomas) were one of the most beloved couples of the series, and were part of the original show from its first episode.

The duo left in season four to raise their baby daughter, and in what brought the new series full circle, returned to send Izzie to school at Waterloo Road.

Sadly, after a riot staged by the students and a car accident that left Chlo with a sprained wrist, the character suddenly collapsed at home.

A panicked Donte rushed his wife to hospital with their two children in tow, but the doctors broke the news in the episode's last moments that Chlo didn't make it.

Horrified by the series twist, fans flocked to Twitter to share their shock and anger at the story decision.

"WHY WOULD YOU KILL CHLOE BREV TF IS WRONG WITH YOU #WaterlooRoad," one person cried.

Another posted: "NOOOO HOW WHAT #waterlooroad."

"Chlo #WaterlooRoad," a third posted next to a string of crying emojis.

While a fourth said: "Killing off Chlo. Poor Donte and kids #WaterlooRoad."

"They DID NOT just kill off Chlo in the first episode #WaterlooRoad," another fan sobbed, followed by: "How can they kill of Chlo already??? #WaterlooRoad."

Waterloo Road continues Tuesdays at 8pm on BBC One.
