Vikings season six will premiere on History and Amazon Prime Video this Autumn. Unfortunately, a release date is yet to be confirmed by the streaming service. Vikings first premiered in 2013 and is inspired by the sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel in Vikings). The Viking Age lasted from approximately 793-1066 but when did the Vikings stop invading Britain and how were they eventually defeated?
Vikings season six will be the last ever series of the historical drama.
The final season, therefore, might address how exactly the Vikings were driven out of England.
The plot of the new series has been kept largely under wraps and the trailer is not giving much away either.
However, show creator Michael Hirst told Digital Spy that season six will “deliver a huge and unexpected revelation to our audience.”
He said: “There are 20 new episodes to come. We visit three new worlds in those episodes, we go through great tragedies and great heroism, and if you have tears to weep, be prepared to weep them as you watch season six.
“I’m very proud of the show. I did what I wanted to do, that’s the truth. I’m desperate for people to see it because it is the most ambitious and intensely emotional episodes of Vikings ever.”
HOW WILL THE FINAL SERIES OF VIKINGS END?
How were the Vikings eventually defeated and driven out of Britain?
The Vikings first invaded Britain in AD 793 at Lindisfarne, on the northeast coast of England.
Despite being beaten numerous times, the Vikings always returned, attempting to conquer more Anglo-Saxon land – they last invaded Britain in 1066.
The Vikings came from Sacndainvida – modern-day Norway, Sweden and Denmark – and for hundreds of years they came to England looting treasure, conquering lands and capturing people as slaves.
They operated mainly in the east and north of England, taking over Northumbria, East Anglia, York and parts of Merica, making modern-day York their capital.
King Alfred of Wessex, who ruled from 871 until 899, was the first King of England to defeat the Vikings at the Battle of Edington in 878.
He successful converted the leader Guthrum to Christianity and took London back from the Vikings in 866.
WILL RAGNER RETURN?
In 866 he also signed a treaty with Guthrum, dividing England between the Vikings and the English.
Viking territory covered north-west, north-east and the east of England and was ruled by Danelaw.
Despite the Danes having power in England, the Vikings did not stop invading.
The final Viking invasion to England was in 1066, led by Viking King Harald Hardrada.
At the time, the English king Harold Godwinson marched north towards Stamford Bridge with his army and defeated Hardrada and his army.
The Battle of Stamford Bridge, Yorkshire took place on September 25, 1066.
WILL LAGERTHA DIE IN VIKINGS SEASON 6?
The death of Hardrada ended any hope of a thriving King Cnut’s North Sea Empire.
Cnut had ruled England and the Viking empire from 1016 until 1042 until his son Edward came to the throne.
Godwinson’s army then marched to Kent 19 days later to fight the Normans led by William of Normandy at the battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066.
King Harold was seated and William of Normandy became the new king England.
According to History.org, ironically, William himself was of Viking descent.
His great-great-grant grandfather was the infamous Viking Rollo, who had invaded Normandy, France in 911.
