David Nicholls has adapted his novel Us into a new mini-series set to begin on the BBC on Sunday, September 20. The show follows the Peterson family as they travel around Europe – here’s everything you need to know about the show’s setting and where it was filmed.
Where is Us on BBC One set?
The main thrust of the new series sees Connie Peterson (played by Saskia Reeves) and Douglas Peterson (Tom Hollander) go on a trip across Europe as their marriage reaches breaking point.
Beginning in Paris, the pair go with their son Albie Peterson (Tom Taylor) on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday.
Some of the cities they head to in the show include Amsterdam, Barcelona and Florence.
However, not all of the mini-series takes place abroad as there are also several scenes, which take place in England.
This includes the flashbacks between Young Douglas (Ian De Caestecker) and Young Connie (Gina Bramhill) which take place in London as their love blossoms.
Where was Us on BBC One filmed?
In order to capture all of the cities featured in the stories, the team filmed across Europe.
While it might be difficult to grasp in a COVID-19 world, this meant the actors took off across the continent.
As viewers will see, a number of each cities’ iconic landmarks were filmed for the series.
This includes a visit to the Louvre in Paris, Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Miro gallery in Barcelona.
These were all shut down for filming so the cast could act out the necessary scenes.
As fans might imagine, this meant there needed to be a lot of organisation of the logistics of this.
Speaking about the filming process, Hollander said: “Every country had a different crew.
“So the British crew met a Dutch crew, a French crew, an Italian crew or a Spanish crew.

“All of this is inconceivable in a covid world because you’d have to have two weeks each time for everyone to quarantine!
“We’d meet and just keep going, there was no slack in the system.”
Some of the filming even takes place on various trains as the family travels across the continent.
Speaking about this, Hollander explained: “We had carriages, and the whole crew and cast were in a carriage.”
He also revealed how in order to do this, they filmed these bits sequentially as well.
However, even with all this, Nicholls revealed how they had to change his initial premise when writing to be able to fit the story into a TV adaptation.
He explained: “The original premise was a country per episode so the whole of episode two would be Holland…
“There was a lot of shuffling around and a lot of condensing, as there always is with an adaptation.
“There are things which you love and would be luxurious to have that the schedule doesn’t allow.”
Us begins on Sunday, September 20 at 9pm.
