THE stars of Amazing Race Australia ended up in a horror hot air balloon crash as the show took a terrifying turn.

The reality show follows teams of two as they race around the country in a bid to win A$250,000.

The latest episode saw the teams get into hot air balloons for a roadblock challenge, something they need to complete in order to progress in the competition.

The teams had to hit targets on the ground, but they soon discovered the balloons were moving faster than they had anticipated.

One contestant called Violeta said: "It’s so windy. I was starting to get worried that we were going to be going too fast and we were going to miss the targets."

Soon after, the pilot took to his radio to say they weren't slowing down, before preparing them for an unexpected landing.

He said: "All right guys, just be ready to tuck everything away."

As they then braced for impact, the pilot added: "Hold onto the handle and face back towards the other balloon.”

Despite the contestants best efforts to stop the crashing and flipping over, their balloon hit a tree at high speed.

The pilot shouted: "We're going to tip over guys, keep holding on!"
