Dylan Dreyer of the Today Show is nearing her due date for her second child. Expecting another baby boy in January, the co-host announced her pregnancy over the summer after experiencing a miscarriage earlier this year.
Sharing her loss
In April, Dreyer decided to publicly share her struggle withsecondary infertility, which that affects about 3 million women in the UnitedStates, according to Today. The condition is when youhave one or more biological children but then struggle to conceive again.
Dreyer revealed that she had a miscarriage in the winter, according to People. “’I think I lost the baby,’” Dreyer told her co-hosts of what she said to her husband, Brian Fichera. She shared that his response was a great comfort to her. “You didn’t lose the baby. It’s your body doing what it needs to do. You didn’t do anything wrong,” Fichera said.
Hoping to help other women who may be going through the same struggle, Dreyer felt it was important to reveal her own story. “This is something you need more awareness of. There’s this guilt that you have for wanting a second child when I have friends of my own who couldn’t have a single child. So here I am being ‘selfish’ that I want to have a second child and it’s like, no, that is not the case. This is our world,” she said. “My sadness doesn’t take away from anyone else’s happiness, and my sadness isn’t minimized because someone else has a sadder situation.” she said.
Second time around
Dreyerand Fichera are parents to son Calvin, who recently turned three years old. TheToday co-host commented on the difference between her first pregnancyand this one.
“I feel sograteful because I know it was so much harder this time around,” Dreyer told People on conceivingher second child. “We weren’t sure we were going to get pregnant or what sortof IVF treatments we’d have to go through to be able to have this baby.”
Focusing on gratitude, Dreyer makes a point of acknowledging the blessing of their newest family member on the way. “So every night I pray and thank God for putting us in this situation and giving us this opportunity and not having to struggle any longer than we did,” she said.
Prepping big brother
Dreyer’s pregnancy this time around is also a bit different due to already being a mom to Calvin, and being concerned on his adjustment to his new sibling. “I’m more worried about Calvin’s feeling than this baby,” she said. “When I was pregnant with Calvin, it was all about the nerves of having a new baby and not knowing what to do with a new baby. And this time around, I know the baby’s going to be fine and I’m so worried about Calvin’s feelings. For the past three years it’s all been about him.”
The expectantparents are making a point of making big brother Calvin feel extra special. “Wemade a whole big deal about converting his room into his big boy room,”Dreyer shared, saying that “we wanted him to not feel like the baby wasstealing his room.”
Dreyer also put aspecial item in Calvin’s to help him know exactly when his baby brother willarrive.
“I had thislittle treasure chest and I put a countdown on it. So every day we cross offthe day now,” she said. “And every day Calvin opens up the treasure chest andit’s a new little gift from his baby brother, little things like a Matchbox caror a little thing of Play-Doh or stickers or just something small, so he’sexcited… I think we’re building excitement for it.”
The countdown ison for Dreyer and family!
