This Morning has sparked nearly 2000 complaints to Ofcom, the broadcast watchdog has confirmed.

While it isn't clear what the complaints were about, Friday's episode featured a segment that proved controversial for some – with a number of viewers labelling it "irresponsible" and "dangerous."

And Ofcom has told that the complaints were logged on the same day as the segment.

It was titled "How To Lose The Lockdown Pounds", and saw Dr Michael Mosley chatting with Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary about a technique for "rapid weight loss" that entailed an 800 calorie-a-day diet.

It's a diet Dr Mosley had previously advocated on his show, Lose a Stone in 21 Days.

Ofcom has since revealed that Friday saw 1,932 complaints logged, but insisted "the number of complaints received is not an indication of how serious an issue is."

Nevertheless, "all complaints are assessed against the Broadcasting Code."

Dr Mosley clarified on the show that he is "a fan of rapid weight loss, if you do it properly."

He claimed that consuming 800 to 1000 calories a day can be "safe and effective", showing three meals to the camera.

For breakfast he showed eggs, a bean and tomato soup for lunch, and a tray of baked vegetables and fish for dinner.

"I'm so excited to come to yours, Dr Mosley," Alison joked as Dermot laughed.

Dr Mosley has previously faced criticism for Lose a Stone in 21 Days, which saw people whose BMIs were categorised as overweight and obese take to the 800 calorie-a-day diet.
