This Is Us fans know Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) issues go deeper than their thoughts on Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) medical care. Now, it looks like viewers will get the chance to explore the Pearson brothers’ history. Recently, Brown teased what’s next for Randall and Kevin in This Is Us Season 5 Episode 13 — and it’s pretty big.
Randall and Kevin start to heal their relationship in ‘This Is Us’ Season 5
Randall and Kevin have always had a complicated relationship on This Is Us. But it reached a breaking point in the fourth season finale. The Pearson brothers initially fought over their mother’s medical care, as she was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. But eventually, Kevin and Randall unearthed 40 years of resentment.
Now, it seems Randall and Kevin made amends in This Is Us Season 5. When Randall learned more about his birth mother in New Orleans, he wanted to move forward with his brother. He also made the ultimate grand gesture by filling in for Kevin while Madison (Caitlin Thompson) was at the hospital.
In the end, both Randall and Kevin apologized. But there’s still plenty of work to be done and conversations to be had.
Sterling K. Brown opens up about Randall and Kevin’s arc in ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 Episode 13
It’s been a few episodes since This Is Us Season 5 touched on Randall and Kevin’s relationship. But in an interview with HollywoodLife, Brown confirmed episode 13, titled “Brotherly Love,” will dive deeper into their history.
“I’ll tease this bit. Episode 13, I believe, is sort of a history of the relationship between Randall and Kevin, and how they have throughout history shown up for each other and antagonized one another to no end,” Brown said. “I think in sort of revisiting the history of their relationship, they recognize that there’s a pattern that has been at play.”
The This Is Us actor also pointed out that Randall and Kevin’s history needs to be explored or else history could potentially repeat itself.
“Maybe with a little bit of perspective and maturity, they can put a different framework around it,” Brown said. “You have to know your history in order to learn from it. Because if you’re unaware of it, then you’re doomed to repeat it.”
That said, it seems Brown is hopeful Kevin and Randall will be able to move forward on This Is Us.
“I’m thinking there’s a possible turning point of real change in the near future,” he said. “I’ll say that, and they’ll write something completely different. But I’m sticking to it for right now.”
What to expect from Randall and Kevin’s next big ‘conversation’ in ‘This Is Us’
When Kevin and Randall started speaking again in This Is Us Season 5, Kevin also acknowledged there were things he didn’t see when they were younger. Randall said they would have that conversation eventually. Then when speaking with HollywoodLife, Brown hinted what to expect when the Pearsons begin to discuss race. The actor also promised fans there will be more than one conversation.
“I think at least the beginnings of a conversation because I think it’s sort of an ongoing thing the idea that race in America can ever be summed up in ‘an’ conversation. I use that on purpose because I know it’s incorrect, but it’s funny to me,” Brown said. “I think it’s a continuing dialogue that everyone has to be open to and be comfortable in their discomfort.”
Then Brown suggested that the upcoming conversations will “not always” be like Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Randall’s chat in the This Is Us Season 5 premiere.
“It’s not something that is always going to make people feel good,” Brown said. “But I think we have to learn how to be comfortable with our discomfort.”
This Is Us Season 5 Episode 13 will air Tuesday, April 13, on NBC.
