With the AMC horror well into its 10th season, the mystery surrounding the origins of the Walkers has still gone unanswered on The Walking Dead. Several theories have emerged among TWD fans as to what exactly the cause could be but none have ever been confirmed. However, a few members of the cast have discussed their theories – from humans to an alien invasion.

The Walking Dead threw fans straight into the action in the series pilot, providing virtually no information about the Walkers.

Instead, fans watched as a bemused Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) woke up in the hospital to a world inhabited by flesh-eating zombies.

Before he had time to question what caused the outbreak, he found himself battling the reanimated corpses for survival.

Even though Rick couldn’t provide an answer in the early episodes, TWD actor-turned-executive producer Michael Cudlitz has argued humans were responsible.

  • The Walking Dead season 10: Negan to kill Alpha in secret betrayal?

Speaking at German Comic-Con Dortmund (via Comic Book), Cudlitz said: “I think we did it to ourselves,

“I think they were developing something and it went really wrong.”

With such a TWD legend siding with the theory, could he know something fans don’t?

He wasn’t the only The Walking Dead alumni to suggest a cause, however.

Ross Marquand, the man behind Aaron, suggested: “It’s aliens.”

He said: “Either aliens were the cause of the zombie apocalypse,

“Or aliens are going to come down and wipe us all out. Either way, it’s gonna be awesome.”

While Marquand’s theory may seem a bit ‘out there’ to some, it’s nothing compared to Carol star Melissa McBride’s idea.

McBride told fans: “I think that it’s a television show,

“Somebody says, ‘Cut! That’s a wrap!’ And then you see all these Walkers take their faces off,

“(They) hug each other and walk away, and it’s just been a television show the whole time.”

Could we see a tormented Carol left stunned by a bunch of very committed actors in the near future?
