Sara Gilbert is a former child actor and pop culture personality, who is known and loved by many fans as one of the original stars of the hit sitcom Roseanne. She has remained in the public eye throughout the course of her life and was a longtime presence on the daytime television show The Talk. Sara Gilbert is still a working actor to this day — although she has since stepped away from The Talk, a show that she helped make famous.
How did Sara Gilbert become famous?
Sara Gilbert was born in California in 1975. Raised in a show business family, with older siblings including Melissa Gilbert of Little House on the Prairie fame, Sara Gilbert was drawn to a career in entertainment from a very early age. She started acting in television commercials and TV shows before she was a teenager, appearing in campaigns for brands like Kool-Aid. When she was 13 years old, she landed the role that would change her life — the part of Darlene Connor in the sitcom Roseanne.
As the sarcastic middle child, she became a fan-favorite right away, and she appeared on the series until 1997, the same year that she graduated from Yale University. A few of Sara Gilbert’s other television roles include parts in The Big Bang Theory, Twins, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
In 2018, she reprised the role of Darlene Connor in the TV series The Conners. She also acted as executive producer on the series — all while working as the host on another TV show that she helped to popularize.
Sara Gilbert is a co-creator of ‘The Talk’
In October 2010, The Talk premiered on television. The daytime talk show featured a panel of high-profile women, from actors to reporters, chatting about current issues of the day. Sara Gilbert was an instrumental force in getting the show on the air, serving as co-creator and original host. She was honored multiple times for her work on the show, receiving a Daytime Emmy in 2016 for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show.
For many fans, The Talk would be unrecognizable without Sara Gilbert — still, as she continued to spread herself thin working on multiple projects, She knew that a change had to be made, and in 2019, she announced her exit from the show that she helped develop.
Why did Sara Gilbert step away as a host of ‘The Talk’?
In the spring of 2019, Sara Gilbert shocked viewers and fans around the world when she announced that she would be leaving The Talk. While it was tempting for many fans to try and pin the cause on some underlying scandal, the truth of the matter, according to Sara Gilbert, was actually pretty simple.
As she revealed: “I obviously love it here, and like I said, this was extremely difficult. Last season, I did The Conners and was also producing and (hosted) here. I loved it and felt totally empowered, but also, if I’m being honest about it, my life was slightly out of balance. I wasn’t able to spend as much time with my three kids as I’d like, or take time for myself.”
While her presence was missed on the show, she never really went away — and can still be seen in several television shows, including on episodes of The Conners.
