The Repair Shop: Julian says he’d be gutted if this was his guitar
The Repair Shop expert Julian Wallis shared his devastation over the “tricky” restoration of a broken guitar during a classic episode of the BBC series.
Guest Alex presented his guitar, which had broken in half, to experts Julian and Will Kirk in the hopes it could be restored to its natural state.
However, before Julian got to work, he admitted he would have been “gutted” if this had happened to any of his beloved guitars.
As Alex walked into the barn, he explained how his guitar had broken in half. He began: “Last winter, I was coming home from university and it was very icy and I slipped on it and it was on my back and it cushioned my blow…and the rest is history.
“It was quite nightmarish actually because I heard the strings pinging off it…tears were shed.”

“Apart from the nasty break, it looks like a nice guitar,” Will beamed before Julian asked: “Where did you buy the guitar?”
Alex replied: “I was 14. I bought it with money saved up from birthdays…Christmas and a bit of money from my nan.
“I saved up for a good year and a half and I got that five years ago.”
When asked what inspired him to play the instrument, the guest simply explained: “I want to be a rock star.”

He continued: “It’s everyone’s dream. I’m currently studying at university for music and I wasn’t always the best at reading or writing or anything like that.
“And music was the one thing that made sense in my head…even through lockdown, where I struggled quite a lot with mental health, anxiety, all that, this was the only thing that saved me with my anxiety.
“It was hard just not being able to see anyone, not being able to perform. It was crushing.”
Before Alex left the barn, he asked the experts if they could restore the guitar so he could play it again.
As Julian got to work, he stated he had a challenge on his hands. He told the camera: “I saw myself in Alex because when I was that age, I had that passion of learning to play guitar and wanted to be a rock star and all those things.
“I would have been absolutely gutted… beside myself if this happened to one of my guitars. Wow, what a state.”
“These always hard to not only align and get right but also look good,” the expert admitted.
However, despite being unsure at first, Julian was able to fully restore the guitar back to its natural glory and Alex was left blown away by the result.
The Repair Shop is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
