The Plot Against America is a new series on HBO which is based on a book of the same name by Philip Roth.
The dystopian book was published back in 2004 and tells of an alternative history where Franklin Roosevelt was defeated in the presidential election of 1940.
Charles Lindbergh takes his place as President and the political climate as the country understands it is turned on its head.
Where is The Plot Against America set?
The series is set in New Jersey during the 1940s and shows the viewers a hypothetical America, through the eyes of a working-class Jewish family.
The main idea behind The Plot Against America is a fictional Lindbergh presidency between June 1940 and October 1942.
The book on which the series is based starts with Lindbergh’s unexpected shot as the Republican Party’s nominee.
The story helps viewers imagine how the war would have played out if the US had authorised Nazi-inspired restrictions on Jewish Americans’ freedom.

He did base some of the characters on his own family members, but Evelyn was not his aunt in reality, although she did have the same maiden name as the character.
The six-part series sees the working-class Jewish family observe the political rise of Lindbergh who turns the nation towards facism.
Throughout the series anti-semitism becomes more accepted in American life and Jewish-American families notice the changes.
