Matt Baker has announced he’s leaving The One Show in the spring after a decade of fronting the BBC programme.
He confirmed the news at the end of Wednesday’s episode in an emotional speech.
‘It’s time for me to wish you a very early Happy Christmas because this is my last One Show before the holidays as I’m off to perform at the London Palladium, but I will be back to say Happy New Year in January,’ Matt began.
‘I would like to take this opportunity to say that at this time of year I like to stop, reflect and take stock.
‘The One Show has been a massive part of my life for a decade now and I’ve loved every second of being a part of it, but I’m going to be leaving this green sofa in the Spring.
‘It’s time to give someone else the opportunity to see how big-hearted and generous you, our One Show viewers really are.’
Matt fought back tears as he thanked viewers for their support over the years, especially those who’ve participated in The Rickshaw Challenge for BBC Children In Need.
‘I’m going to miss you all very much all indeed and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart,’ he continued.
But we won’t be bidding farewell to Matt on our tellies for good just yet.
‘I’m continuing with Countryfile and BBC Sport and excited about other opportunities that come my way but most of all I’m looking forward to having dinner with my family and being able to put my kids to bed,’ he added.
Viewers were devastated by Matt’s exit news and shared their upset on Twitter, with one writing: ‘So sad to hear Matt Baker tonight, brought me to tears too. It will not be the same without you.’
Echoing a similar sentiment, another added: ‘Oh my I had tears in my eyes along with Matt Baker! Evenings won’t be the same.’
Matt first started off on The One Show as a guest presenter and stood in for Jason Manford.
Jason left the show three months after its debut, with Matt then acting as a guest co-host until he became a permanent fixture alonsgide Alex Jones.
