In the world of The Handmaid’s Tale, fans know no one is who they seem, but more recently many have looked back over previous scenes from the second season with those involving Nick Blaine (played by Max Minghella).
Up until recently, Nick has been built up to become June Osborne’s (Elisabeth Moss) stoic-but-abiding love interest, however some viewers are convinced he is hiding a dark secret, one to do with the future of Gilead.
Taking to Reddit, a user named StandUpSitDownLaugh revealed their theory about Nick’s true intentions.
They said: “The show is trying to make us doubt Nick’s loyalty. But there are two key scenes that let us know he can’t be loyal to Gilead.
“He meets with Luke in Canada when Fred [Waterford (Joseph Fiennes)] and Serena [Joy (Yvonne Strahovski)] first travel there. His only purpose during that meeting at the bar could have been to give comfort to June’s husband.”
Fans will remember this scene, Nick delivering the news to Luke that his wife, June, is pregnant by her rapist and Nick’s boss, Commander Waterford.
In turn, Luke gave Nick an emotional message to take back to June, not knowing Nick is in fact both the baby’s father as well as June’s lover.
The Reddit user’s post continues with: Luke has no power or insight and is only a refugee.”
Discussing the second moment, they add: “Helping get Nicole to Canada. That action would have no benefit to Gilead.”
To add to this, in episodes from the recent series, Nick’s role has become apparent.

The Swiss delegates initially promised June they would keep Nichole in Canada if Nick, a rising commander and powerful Eye, agrees to spilling secrets about Gilead.
Once a Gilead War General, Nick is the one who knows most about the highly mysterious dictatorship and yet his current role is still under wraps.
After meeting with Nick, the delegate Lena explains how he “cannot be trusted”.
“I don’t think you know who Mr. Blaine is,” she added, emphasising whoever the man was in his past is not someone the Swiss can do business with now.
So what is Nick’s secret plan for Gilead and who is going to be affected?
What does Nick really want?
It comes after episode seven of season three, Under His Eye when viewers tuned in to see June attempt to take her daughter out of school and run away with her.
With such a maternal nature, it has been the downfall for the Handmaid and while many are waiting for her to rise and conquer, it seems it may not happen any time soon.
Therefore, does this mean the series is going to continue for at least another series or even two?
To add to this, it is highly likely June is going to remain, but whether or not she will be successful in getting Hannah back is another thing.
The Handmaid’s Tale returns to Channel 4 tonight at 9pm.
