Sylvester Stallone has been one of the most iconic Hollywood action heroes since he made his debut in Rocky. Since then, he has made countless movies and locked horns with many different baddies on the big screen. However, one of his most famous rivalries is with The Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger, who duped him into starring in a bad movie.

Stallone looked back on his career in an extensive new interview, where he referenced the historic box office bomb Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.

The 1992 movie centred around a cop’s rogue mother who got in the way and interfered with the hero’s life.

At the time, Stallone and Schwarzenegger had a competition to claim one another’s film roles. So when Sly heard Arnie wanted the Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot role, he immediately organised a meeting to get the film slot. But Schwarzenegger was messing with him.

In the new interview, Stallone said: “I had heard Schwarzenegger was going to do that movie and I said: ‘I’m going to beat him to it.'”

He added: “I think he set me up.”

Stallone’s interview with The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Schwarzenegger spoke up about the feud, as well.

They asked the Predator star if he lured Stallone into taking a film he “knew would be a box office flop”.

He replied: “It’s 100 percent true. In those days we did all kinds of crazy things to get ahead in our rivalry. Luckily for us and everyone else, today, we root for each other. Thank God, because we sure don’t ever need another Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.”

This was not the only time Stallone and Schwarzenegger had a falling out. They even got physical during one argument.

Stallone once recalled meeting “the big guy” at the 1977 Golden Globes, when his boxing movie Rocky was up for a number of awards.

The rival actors were sat opposite one another on what would become a brutal night for both of them.

Stallone said Schwarzenegger began “making fun” of him. He said: “I’m going, who is this big guy? And he’s gloating and gloating [about Rocky not winning any awards].”

Eventually, Rocky won the Best Motion Picture award, and Stallone couldn’t wait to rub it in.

“Finally,” Stallone said. “It’s time for Rocky.” He then sent a large object flying towards the Terminator actor’s head.

“I managed to grab this giant bowl of flowers,” Stallone admitted. “And heaved it in his direction. It had lilies and tulips… It began a ten-year battle royale. And I thought: The gauntlet is down.”

The actor added that the pair “couldn’t stand to be in the same galaxy together”. He also described the pair’s relationship as a “violent hatred”.

The actors’ rivalry even bled into their movies. In the Schwarzenegger movie, Twins, he made fun of a Rambo poster. In Stallone’s Tango & Cash, he beat up a Schwarzenegger lookalike. He later admitted that he “imagined it was Arnold” during filming.

Since then, Rocky and the Terminator have made up.

Stallone and Schwarzenegger have settled their differences, and have even starred in the same movies together.

The pair of them made marks in The Expendables series as allies, and now have a powerful friendship.
