Strictly Come Dancing’s Will Bayley broke down in tears as he opened up on his disability following his departure from the dancing competition tonight.
The Paralympian was forced to quit the show after he injured his leg, and it all got a bit too much as he spoke out for the first time following his exit on It Takes Two.
With the support from his dancing pro partner Janette Manrara, the star, who suffers from arthrogryposis (a rare condition which affects all four of his limbs, causing curved and/or stiff joints and muscle weakness), insisted it wasn’t his disability that caused his injury.
He said: ‘I just want people to know that it’s not because I have a disability, I don’t want people to be put off dancing, it can happen to anyone, it’s just unlucky.’
The table tennis champion went on to point out that Neil Jones has also been left injured as well as Katya.
Through blurry eyes, the 31-year-old continued: ‘It’s gutting isn’t it? I didn’t want it to end like this, I wouldn’t mind properly ending it, even if we went out next week or the week before, but I didn’t want to end it like this.
‘To do the salsa and getting you up in those lifts, I never thought I could do half of the stuff – but I was scared of dancing and [Janette] believed in me.’
Choosing his highlights of the show, Will went on: ‘The last one we did was so special it was amazing, I understood the dance, it meant so much to me, it was so special.
‘Going back to Great Ormond Street – it was just so special that dance.’
Janette also showered him with support: ‘I think as I said on the week, we ended this, it’s not how we wanted to end it, but in my eyes, we ended it on a high. That dance is the reason why I dance.
‘We dance to touch people and inspire people and Will is the epitome of that, and that dance shows that.’
The pro continued: ‘All I have in my heart right now is so many incredibly awesome moments I shared with Will, not just onscreen, but just me and him chatting about life.
‘I genuinely feel I have made a friend for life. I am happy I have met him.’
It Takes Two continues tomorrow at 6.30pm on BBC 2.
