With uncertainty plaguing many of Netflix’s productions, fans have been returning to old episodes of Stranger Things for hints as to how the 80s nostalgia trip will continue. Viewers are still unsure what exactly lurks in the shadows of the Upside Down, but some eagle-eyed fans have some idea.
Since the first season, the town of Hawkins has been under threat from other worldly monsters.
From an army of Demogorgons to the godlike Mind Flayer, the alternate dimension the Upside Down is a potentially apocalyptic yet mysterious threat.
Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) disappeared into the corrupted parallel universe during season one, and fans are still intrigued by what lies beneath Hawkins.
One convincing theory may have hit upon the answers waiting for viewers in the upcoming season four.

A fan took to Reddit to speculate how one of the series’ key cast members, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) could be more connected to the other world than fans thought.
Redditor aintscaredofthefall suggested: “The Upside Down is Eleven’s mind and all the monsters are directly representative of the trauma she has suffered growing up as a lab rat.”
Eleven was introduced in the first season as a troubled teenager with telekinetic powers, thanks to cruel experiments overseen by Dr Brenner (Matthew Modine).
This theory suggests the Upside Down is intrinsically linked to Eleven, and her gang of friends Will, Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) can only free themselves from the Upside Down’s grasp by killing their friend.
Unless, they come up with an ingenious yet impossible plan that just might work.
The fan continued: “There is no way to kill it without killing her. So to defeat it some kind of time travel (as hinted in s3) is involved to ensure that Brenner never gets his hands on her.”
Although time travel was never explicitly involved in season three, there were several references to Back to the Future, with clips from the classic blockbuster shown when Steve (Joe Keery) and Robin (Maya Hawke) see the film in the Starcourt Mall’s movie theatre.
They finally added: “Everything we see is canon but the timeline will reset (main cast keep their memories, so we keep the existing friendships) and the series will end with Jane and Mike becoming friends normally at school with all the other characters living out their lives without any ‘stranger things’.”

Of course, the fan admits they wrote the theory in about five minutes, but it still stands as one of the more convincing suggestions for how the series could end.
Additionally, an adjacent theory speculates Brenner and the Mind Flayer could also be connected, adding weight to possibilities of the Upside Down being connected to Eleven.
One fan said: “Brenner is the Mind Flayer. He’s been in the Upside Down since he was attacked in season one.”
If the Upside Down is a manifestation of Eleven’s trauma, it would certainly make sense if the largest threat was a mutation of the person who caused her all that pain.

Another viewer elaborated: “There’s a few I like but the theory that Brenner is the true Big Bad and real Final Boss of the series is my favorite because it seems really possible.”
Matthew Modine hasn’t been officially confirmed to return in season four, but he has appeared in visions and flashbacks after his death so it’s certainly possible fans could seem him turn up again.
Stranger Things is among the vast number of series shut down in the wake of the covid-19 pandemic, so fans will be waiting longer than anticipated for the next season.
Stranger Things seasons 1-3 are available on Netflix now.
