Stranger Things fans were shocked and appalled to see Jim Hopper (played by David Barbour) killed off at the end of season three.
The beloved Netflix character was cut down in his prime while trying to close the void into the Upside Down.
Although he was successful on his mission with Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), it didn’t stop him from paying with his life.
However, at the end of the season, a post-credits scene confirmed the Russians had successfully captured “The American”, instantly giving fans hope Hopper would still be alive.
Now, one eager Reddit user has scoured the show for a clue on who The American could be, and it seems they may have just cracked the case.
bilbo044 shared: “This may have already been mentioned but I noticed it on second watch through.
“When Hopper kills the guards in episode eight and Grigori finds out, he refers to Hopper as ‘The American’.
“Could be a nod to the end credit scene and it seems likely it is him.”
Meanwhile, another fan commented under the original post to suggest Hopper could actually be trapped in the Upside Down.

TwistArachna said: “I agree – there’s not really any way the Russians could’ve grabbed him and pulled him out of death’s reach in time.
“The only thing that would make sense would be that he’s in the Upside Down.”
Meanwhile, there has been fresh evidence from Millie Bobby Brown that her on-screen dad is alive.
The Eleven actress recently caught up with David for a cute reunion meal, and his considerable facial hair got people talking.
Many thought his large beard was a sign he had been growing it for his role as Hopper after he had been trapped in the Upside Down.
One said: “Am I the only one who believes David’s beard is an indication to Hopper being the ‘American’?”
Another added: “I am guessing he is growing his beard for season four because he is stuck in the Upside Down.”
“Hopefully growing that beard to make it look like he was kept in a Russian base,” said a third.
This comes as some fans think Eleven will turn out to be a villain in season four.
Stranger Things seasons 1-3 are streaming now on Netflix.
