STARS of ’80s TV show Metal Mickey have vowed to save its stricken robot.

They are plotting a rescue bid after we revealed that Mickey faced the scrapheap.

Its creator Johnny Edward died aged 75 in August with no direct family to take the 5ft droid in his flat. His landlords are threatening to bin it, sparking fury from co-stars Gary Shail, 62, and Lucinda Freeman, 61.

Gary, who played the comic robot’s punky teen brother Steve, said: “If there is any risk of him being chucked in a skip this cannot happen.

“The landlords, who I am sure are a bunch of millennials, won’t have a clue who Mickey is, and how big of a part he is of so many people’s lives.”

Gary, who is still an actor, went on: “If worst comes to worst I would bring my lawyer up there, break in and rescue him.”

Lucinda, who played Mickey’s love interest Haley and now works in an equestrian centre, added: “Losing him would be like losing a loved one. He was a part of TV history. So many people would be devastated.”

Metal Mickey, also starring legend Irene Handl, ran on ITV from 1980 to 1983, pulling in more than 12million viewers.

It is not known if the robot was left to anyone in Johnny’s will, and his former landlords, JS Estates, in Stamford Hill, North London, have refused to allow solicitors or friends to enter the flat.

A spokesperson for the landlords told The Sun: “It is in our interests to get the flat cleared as soon as possible so we can re-let it, so the sooner this is sorted the better.”
