After an emotional week for Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) and Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) in Emmerdale, tonight’s (December 11) episode will see the couple reach a devastating decision to terminate the pregnancy of their unborn baby with Down’s Syndrome.
Last night saw Laurel tell Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) that she was pregnant, and the baby had Down’s Syndrome. Rhona told Laurel what life is like raising Leo, but was left horrified when Laurel told her she was considering terminating her pregnancy.
The special episode tonight will be a five-hander focusing on Laurel and Jai as they come to their decision, as well as Rhona and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock), who reflect on how lucky they are to have their son, and Gabby (Rosie Bentham) as she comes to terms with Laurel deciding to end the pregnancy.
During the episode, Rhona reaches out to Laurel to make amends for their argument.
Actress Zoe Henry recently spoke to us about Rhona’s involvement in the storyline: ‘What it does is give a full picture and balance, because actually Laurel’s story is the polar opposite of Rhona’s story that we played 10 years ago. You need that to complete the picture. It would have been very odd to tell Laurel and Jai’s story without including Rhona, Marlon and the difficult choices they came up against.’
Discussing so many factors, Laurel and Jai eventually come to their decision. But can they prepare themselves with the emotional aftermath and what’s ahead?
