Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) had something of a tough day in EastEnders, but he was left worried for Phil’s (Steve McFadden) wellbeing and therefore — in spite of his dad’s request — followed Danny Hardcastle (Paul Usher) to the location of the dodgy job, and things soon spiralled out control — leaving the young man fully deaf as a result.
In a game-changing episode told from Ben’s point-of-view, the day of the dodgy deal arrived, and Ben wasted little time in getting out of bed and getting ready after realising that he’d slept in.
As he dropped Lexi off at school, he found himself distracted by the sight of Peter (Dayle Hudson) and Lola (Danielle Harold), who looked rather cosy following their intimate exchange several weeks back — which Ben witnessed.
He confronted Lola on the matter, and her reaction was enough to determine that there was more going on than meets the eye, but Jay’s (Jamie Borthwick) attempt to intervene resulted in him having to leave the matter alone for now.
Meanwhile, back at the Mitchell household, Phil took Ben through the impending job. However, Ben was unable to follow what his dad was saying as he was speaking too quickly.
Phil became infuriated, and therefore suggested Ben sit this one out, but the young man was having none of it, and produced a gun to suggest that he’s more than capable of pulling this off.
However, the gun was the final straw for Phil, who decided there and then that Ben was not going to be taking part in the operation, and thus told him to go and rest up.
Ben was fuming, and — upon exiting his family home — he set out to find Lola once more. However, he soon came across Jay — who wasted little time in giving him a piece of his mind over the confrontation with Lola this morning.
Amid their argument, Jay revealed that Lola had had an abortion, and that she’d cited him as the reason why.
Ben was devastated — having come to believe that she’d aborted Peter’s baby and used his hearing loss as a cover — and therefore he dragged her out of the salon and straight to the Arches to sort things out once and for all.
Lola eventually admitted her infidelity, and Ben scolded her for betraying Jay in such a fashion, but when Lola realised he had the wrong end of the stick about the abortion, she attempted to explain the real version of events.
Ben was unable to understand anything that she was saying, and therefore he left — leaving Lola in fear of Jay finding out about her dalliance with Peter.
However, his mind once again turned to the job, as he witnessed a dodgy moment between Danny and the van driver nearby — suggesting that his dad was heading right into a trap.
Ben rushed to the Arches, and — after replacing the licence plate on Gray’s (Gray Atkins) vehicle — he raced to the location of the job.
However, he was soon apprehended, and Danny was less than pleased to discover his presence.
Yes, it became clear that Danny was very much setting Phil and Ben up — and the dead body nearby suggested that it was for murder.
Ben begged Danny not to do so, but the gangster — infuriated by the fact that Ben couldn’t hear him — shot the gun, leaving Ben screaming in pain.

In spite of things looking bad for the pair, Phil and Ben eventually got the upper hand and managed to escape.
What’s more, Phil managed to secure the cash needed to buy the Vic, but as they drove away from the scene of the crime — and expertly evaded the police too — it became apparent that Ben couldn’t hear at all following the gunshot.
