RYLAN Clark-Neal-fronted reboot Supermarket Sweep has been criticised for food wastage after last night’s ITV2 debut.

The cult game show, which originally aired in the nineties fronted by Dale Winton, made a long-awaited comeback on Monday night, with beloved presenter Rylan at the helm.

He was joined by Coronation Street icon Jennie McAlpine, who took on the role of announcer – and while viewers may have lapped up the pairing, they took issue with what they perceived to be the unnecessary waste of food.

This came after one contestant threw multiple boxes of grapes onto the floor, before trampling over them as she rushed to the checkout.

Before long Twitter was flooded with angry messages.

“Cannot believe that you have allowed this woman to chuck food on the floor! Food waste is an absolute disgrace! Sort it out pronto!” one user fumed.

Another agreed: “Watching Supermarket Sweep takes me back to my youth. But seriously disgusted by the waste of food in it, like with the fruit all over the floor.

“It’s ridiculous, sure that could go to help feed the homeless or something and the show could use fake products.”

A third chimed in: “Rylan you are great and so far I’m quite liking the show. But can’t accept the shameful waste of those grapes.

“What happens to that fruit? Won’t watch again if this is the way of things.”

Meanwhile a fourth quipped: “The fresh food waste is making me uncomfortable.”

While it’s unlikely that the crushed grapes will have been passed on, Rylan previously explained on This Morning that where possible, food was passed on to food banks.

“For TV purposes we want it to be looking pristine, but there are still three, four, five weeks on that fresh produce so we donate it,” he said.

“All the food is real, we replenish it every three or four days and all of the products that are perishable but still best before they don’t go to waste.”

Supermarket Sweep airs on Mondays at 8pm on ITV2.
