Season four of hit teen drama series Riverdale wrapped up last week albeit earlier than planned. The coronavirus pandemic saw the latest run truncated with the remaining three episodes not airing after filming was suspended. Despite the show coming to an end sooner than expected, fans have questions about the forthcoming outing.
Will Jughead and Betty break up in Riverdale season 5?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Riverdale season 4
The fourth series of Riverdale left fans reeling in shock as Betty Cooper (played by Lili Reinhart) cheated on her beloved boyfriend Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).
Betty shared a stolen kiss with best friend Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) during the musical episode of the series.
They later spoke about the moment with Betty calling it quits on their romance and burning her childhood diaries where she had written about her love for the redheaded jock.
Archie and Betty always had a chemistry but things never worked out after he rejected her in season one.

Instead, Betty ended up dating the moody, beanie-loving teen Jughead with the couple becoming an instant hit with fans and gaining the portmanteau “Bughead”.
While Archie dated Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) with the couple temporarily breaking up when he had to skip town because her father Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) was after him.
Both couples have been pretty solid until season four when it looked like there could be heartbreak on the cards for both.
Although Betty may have stopped anything from progressing with Archie, telling him the kiss was simply an insecurity issue with the teenagers heading to college, something could still happen.
In the Archie Comics, which Riverdale is based on, there’s a constant love triangle involving Betty, Archie and Veronica.
So, the TV series could riff on its comic roots and see more of this playing out on screen.
Speaking to TV Line in a recent interview, Riverdale’s showrunner Robert Aguirre-Sacasa shared details about the fifth season.
He also hinted things could be going downhill for the quartet in the next outing.
The executive explained: “We’ve definitely not seen the last of that story.
“On a basic level, Veronica and Jughead don’t know anything that happened in the bunker or in Archie’s garage, so there’s still absolutely that to play.
“I think coming out of last week’s episode, it was clear that, whatever had happened with Archie, Betty was reinvesting in her relationship with Jughead, and Archie was sort of more lost and confused than ever.”
Aguirre-Sacasa continued: “So they were basically in very different places about it, and I think we’re going to play that.

“In [episode] 19, because it’s such a fun episode and there’s a conceit in the story, it’s sort of status quo between the four of them.”
He ominously added: “But definitely, there are major, major repercussions for what Betty and Archie did that go down at prom, in true teen drama fashion. So no, we haven’t seen the end of that story by a long shot.”
His words hint, the consequences of the kiss were going to play out at the prom, which fans would have seen if the filming hadn’t stopped.
Instead, prom, graduation and those other pivotal American high school moments will be happening at the start of season five now.
Also, the upcoming series will see the core four splitting up as they go off to different colleges.
This physical distance hints it could also be curtains for Jughead and Betty with their lives going in different directions.
