RICK and Morty sparked outrage with a 'tone deaf' joke about the alien Twin Towers.

Season four of the popular comedy has now hit screens and while it has been filled with hilarious jokes and unexpected twists, but this particular gag didn't go down too well with some fans.

During the latest episode Rick and Morty were seen viciously fighting back towards their adversaries.

One scene on particular saw the duo come up against two towers before managing to avoid them.

After just missing the towers Rick and Morty instead attacked a harbour, whilst directly referencing the Pearl Harbour event, saying: "We ALMOST did a 9/11, we went with the Pearl Harbour, we're pretty classy."

Fans were a little stunned by the references to the 2001 US terror attack and took to Twitter to voice their views.

One wrote: "No they didn't… omg 9/11 #RickandMorty."

Another fan said sarcastically: "Is Rick and Morty still doing 9/11 jokes? Because wow, that's so funny in 2020."

A third added: "DAMN, that 9/11 joke was a bit harsh… but the Pearl Harbour one was okay. #RickandMorty," with another saying: "This freaking 9/11 gag in RICK AND MORTY. My God. #RickAndMorty."

However, a fourth fan seemed to find the jokes quite funny, as they responded: "Holy s**t the pan to the alien Twin Towers was the hardest I’ve ever laughed at this show."

Rick and Morty star Chris Parnell spoke to TVWeb and addressed a quicker turnaround between series four and five.

The 53-year-old said: "[Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland] wanted some job security, and they wanted to know that the show was going to be around for a while so that they and the writers could get into some sort of momentum."

He added: "We'll see less lengthy breaks between seasons going forward because of that. And it's very gratifying to know we're going to have all those episodes. Hopefully Jerry will be around for the duration. You never know."

Following the huge success of Rick and Morty season 3, Cartoon Network's Adult Swim awarded the show with a nearly unheard of 70-episode renewal.
