Good Morning Britain co-presenter Piers Morgan experienced an embarrassing end to his time on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? when he left with a mere £1,000 after taking a wrong turn on a Formula One question.

On tonight’s show, Piers sat in the hot seat opposite host Jeremy Clarkson in a bid to raise money for Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a charity that provides support to children whose parents lost their lives serving in the British Armed Forces.

Having reached £16,000, Piers, 55, was in line to get to his safety net of £32,000 when he was asked which world champion racing driver had not been a teammate of Lewis Hamilton in Formula One.

With the options being Kimi Räikkönen, Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Piers called up his GMB co-presenter Susanna Reid for help, although she was unable to offer a guess.

In the end, Piers opted for the incorrect option Jenson Button, with the right answer being Kimi Räikkönen.

This meant that he ended up leaving with just £1,000, despite managing to climb the ladder to 16 times that amount.

Despite coming away with far less than he intended, Piers pledged to make up the difference to his chosen charity, donating £15,000 of his own money for a total of £16,000.

One viewer praised Piers for making up the money to Scotty’s Little Soldiers, tweeting: ‘What an amazing gesture!’

Another person remarked that while the broadcaster had a ‘shocker’ on the programme, ‘fair play for making up the difference to charity’.

Also starring on tonight’s celebrity special of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? was Diversity star Jordan Banjo.

On Christmas Day, Piers shared a moving tribute to Kate Garraway, who was spending the day apart from her husband Derek Draper.

Derek has been in hospital since March after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

‘We’re particularly thinking of our colleague Kate, of course, who won’t be with Derek this Christmas. It was always a special time, we know, for the family and our hearts go out to Kate and the kids today,’ Piers said on Good Morning Britain.
