Outlander has introduced many mysterious characters over the course of its five seasons. Phaedre (played by Natalie Simpson) is one of the more elusive figures in the show, having only appeared in season four. Book fans will know more about her, as the character appears within the novel franchise by Diana Gabaldon. But who are Phaedre’s parents in the Starz show?
Warning: This story contains spoilers for Outlander book six – A Breath of Snow and Ashes
Who are Phaedre’s parents?
Phaedre has a mysterious and dark past, having come to America as a slave and she now resides at River Run.
The character is Jocasta Cameron’s (Maria Doyle Kennedy) maid and body slave, however, her backstory, including her parents, are never revealed.
Fans have been discussing the character ahead of season six, with many hopeful that she could make a return considering her appearances in the novels.
In Gabaldon’s books, Phaedre is explored further as she appears in four of the nine novels.
Phaedre appears in Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, A Breath of Snow and Ashes and An Echo in the Bone.
Her character is explored most in-depth in A Breath of Fire and Ashes, which is being adapted for the sixth season of the series.
On Reddit, one fan has taken to the Outlander subreddit to figure out who Phaedre’s parents really are, with book fans offering an answer.
The fan wrote: “Now as an enslaved person we know that she may have been bought individually and sold away from her parents, however by her Scottish accent it appears that she grew up near to her enslavers (Jocasta and her husbands) all of her life, probably in the house.
“From her light complexion and her residence in the house, one would automatically speculate that her father was one of Jocasta’s husbands who slept with an enslaved woman.”
The show has still deliberately left the character’s origins vague, as it is hinting at the reveal which takes place in the books.
The fan continues: “But after watching season 5 episode 11 again which is the episode after Ulysses (Colin McFarlane) killed Mr Forbes (Billy Boyd) for Jocasta, it’s apparent that he was in love with her.
“Is it at all possible that Phaedre is the love child of Jocasta and Ulysses?” (sic)
This explanation could turn out to be true in the series, as the show has diverged from the original source material before.
However, another fan came in with the answer from the books, which is close to the estimation given in the original post.
The fan replied: “If you want to know the answer here are spoilers from A Breath of Snow and Ashes – Phaedre is the daughter of Hector Cameron, Jocasta’s husband, and a slave named Betty.” (sic)
Hector Cameron (Christopher Bowen) was the third wife of Jocasta and appeared in one flashback during season four.
Betty has not yet appeared in the series, with both characters being largely unexplored on the show.
If Phaedre’s origins are explored in the show, Hector and Betty would likely feature in a flashback sequence.
Sadly, it doesn’t look like this will be happening in season six of the series, as Natalie Simpson is not slated to return.
Season six is set for an early 2022 release date, though no specific date has been given by Starz.
Filming of season seven will commence shortly after as Starz has already announced the follow-up season.
It is possible Phaedre could appear there as the cast and plot details for season seven have not yet been revealed.
For now, fans of the show will have to turn to the books to learn more about the character.
Natalie Simpson’s last role following her appearance in Outlander was as Erika Marx in Midsomer Murders.
The star has also appeared in the show The Mallorca Files as well as acting on stage as part of National Theatre Live’s Three Sisters.
Outlander is available to watch on Starz and Amazon Prime Video.
