The Droughtlander is officially over now after Starz dropped the season five premiere early on its app. The show will be airing on TV in the US on Sunday, February 16. Outlander will be airing on Starz in America and Amazon Prime in the UK with episodes airing weekly. Here’s everything you need to know about the settings and filming of the new series.

Where is Outlander season 5 set?

Season five is going to be picking up after the events of the fourth run.

So, fans will be taken back to Fraser’s Ridge in North Carolina and reunited with their favourite characters.

The fifth outing is going to be based on author Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

Based on The Fiery Cross’ timeline, season five will start off in 1770 on the cusp of the American Revolutionary War.

The show left things on a dramatic note after Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) was called upon to fulfil his oath by General Tyron (Tim Downie) and form a militia as well as hunting down Murtagh Fraser (Duncan Lacroix).

While the key setting will be Fraser’s Ridge and Claire Fraser’s (Caitriona Balfe) surgery, there will also be other settings as Jamie is sent to find his fugitive godfather.

Also, the show will see Jamie forced to fight in battle and drafted out to the frontline.

Outlander is going to be diverging from the source material, so there could be other settings.

Given the show’s inclusion of time travel, there could also be a return to the future at some point.

Where is Outlander season 5 filmed?

Scotland has served as the base for Outlander since the series launched in 2014.

Despite the setting of the show changing over the years and moving away from Scotland, the nation is still the home of Outlander.

Various locations in Scotland double up for North Carolina in the 18th century.

Production on season five began in April 2019 in Scotland with the cast sharing a snap from the set.

Speaking to the Radio Times about filming in Scotland rather than America, star Heughan said: “I was initially surprised and a little like: it’s a shame we weren’t there, because I thought, ‘that’s going to bring something new to it.’

“But actually having said that now, I think Scotland is just ideal for it.”

He went on to say: “I went to North Carolina, I visited there, I spent a few days going around various locations, and it just looks the same!

“In a way we have this freedom [in Scotland]: we have this base, we can adapt a lot more because we have the studios here already, we have a crew that knows us and we know each other.
